New proposed mine along popular Smith river raises controversy

The company behind a controversial new mine files its mining permit, sparking concerns from river guides and environmental groups.

Tintina Resources plans to build the Black Butte Copper Mine near the Smith River, a blue-ribbon trout stream located in the Castle Mountains near White Sulphur Springs.

Smith River guides and consumer group MontPIRG say they are concerned arsenic and acid mine drainage may contaminate the river, which they call a recreational treasure to Montanans as well as those from out of state.
