University of Montana School of Business Administration Students win award in Pronto Cycle Share Data Challenge

I wanted to take a brief moment to sing the praises of the students in Telling Stories with Data (BMKT 491.2).

With about one week’s notice we entered a data analysis contest centered around a large-ish data set from usage of Seattle’s bike share program. The students voted to cram the contest submission into the already-busy semester schedule, worked on analyzing the data, and assembled the results into an infographic https://magic.piktochart.com/output/9260379-umt-pronto-data-challenge-2015

And, we won the People’s Choice award https://www.prontocycleshare.com/datachallenge (The fact that we had 23 authors, all of whom understand marketing and have active social media presences could have played a role in that.) The congratulations email is below.

Students who played a big role in the project include Chris Jambor, Jake Flesch, Jenni Graff, Jillian Seaton, Kyle Curnow, William Milligan, Anne Hagerty and Katherine Leonard. William brought in a graduate friend of his, Eric Hinshaw, to help with some 3D modeling. Finally, Bailey Harper led the effort and deserves much praise.

As an aside, one part of the prize is an Xbox bundle. I was planning on selling this to take the students out for snacks. If you’re interested in buying this for someone (perhaps a holiday gift?) or to fill the post-semester void in your life after the grading is gone, let me know.

Cheers,

John Chandler

P.S. The guy who won the "Most Insightful" prize really killed it. Check out his visualization http://willleahy.info/bikeshare/ I’m emailing with him to get him to help us think about how Analytics/Media Arts/Journalism/CompSci could work together to position our students to do this kind of work.
