5 Montana hospitals penalized for readmission rates

Five Montana hospitals are among more than 2,500 nationwide — more than half of those evaluated — who will be penalized for having too many patients wind up back in a hospital after discharge.

Specifically, the hospitals did not perform as well as expected when the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) looked at the rates of readmission of patients originally admitted for one of five circumstances — heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, chronic lung problems, or hip or knee replacement.
