When Sunburst Sensors won $1.5 million in prize money last month, the work of Michael DeGrandpre went from the trash bin to the international stage.

DeGrandpre is a chemistry professor at the University of Montana whose research led to the creation of Sunburst Sensors http://www.sunburstsensors.com/ , a company that develops chemical sensors for marine and freshwater applications.

This week, he said his reputation was on the line when Sunburst entered its sensors into the international XPRIZE, and the company had all hands on deck for the year of the competition.
