‘The best job in the world’: Fishing guides turn an obsession into a career

Get into guiding for the love of fishing or days on the river, learn from the people you meet, but don’t get into it for the money, said Mark Raisler, co-owner of Headhunters Fly Shop in Craig.

"Your office is your boat and sometimes you have to remember you’re getting paid to be in your office," he said. "But you’re not going to make much money, so that’s probably a mistake a lot of young guides make is thinking they’ll make a lot of money doing this."

The Seattle native first came to Montana in the early 1990s to fish, eventually landing in Missoula looking to guide. When the freestone rivers near Missoula were too blown out with spring runoff, a trip to the tail waters of Missouri River changed Raisler’s thinking.
