NeighborWorks helps low-income homebuyers for 35 years
NeighborWorks Great Falls http://www.nwgreatfalls.org/ , which got its start as Neighborhood Housing Services and simplified its name in 1997, is a celebrating its 35th anniversary with a staggering amount and range of achievements throughout Great Falls, including helping renovate or build 319 homes and adding $36.5 million to the county tax base.
Great Falls was hitting the economic skids in 1980, with the shifting of a major Air Force mission to Washington state and the closure of the former Anaconda Co.’s Black Eagle refinery costing the city nearly 2,000 jobs and a lot of self-confidence.
On top of that, homes in Great Falls’ original townsite — the Lower North and South Sides west of 10th Street — were showing severe signs of distress, with 16 percent residential vacancy and 14 houses boarded up in one three-block area alone.
