How Big Data Is Changing Basketball

Sports statistics were once the realm of the guys who couldn’t make the team: note-takers, pencil-pushers and number nerds who watched and recorded every swing, miss and pass of every player throughout the season. Today, high-definition cameras and high-powered data analytics are replacing human statisticians and scouts to give coaches — and many fantasy league fans — an edge when it comes to predicting the score of the game and the performance of athletes.

Pro and college teams are using so-called big data and machine leaning algorithms that analyze a game by reviewing images of each players’ activity that are taken 25 times per second.
