Not everyone wants to be a full-time finance chief.

Interim CFO roles are often auditions for the job on a permanent basis, but it also means a more experienced hand is likely to get the gig. Some companies, however, pick from a subset of professionals who are hired guns brought in to perform complex tasks, turnaround ailing businesses or shepherd them through bankruptcy protection.

"We see it ebb and flow in terms of demand," said Chris Morris, New York managing partner for short-term placement firm Tatum US. "In a strong labor market we’ll see companies hire faster."
