John Doerr of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers says tech, VC firms would do better ‘if they hired more women’

When asked by a juror why there aren’t more women in venture capital — were they simply not interested? — Doerr said the shortage of women VCs is the result of too few women entrepreneurs. Venture firms often recruit tech founders and CEOs, but that group does not include many women.

Jurors in a high-profile sex discrimination case got a deeper look into the challenges women face in venture capital and the rarity of anyone — man or woman — getting a promotion at venture firms when the group of 12 on Wednesday had the chance to question one of the lead witnesses.

The trial between Silicon Valley executive Ellen Pao and her former employer, venture firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, has been dotted with numerous and thoughtful questions from members of the jury, allowing them to get more information from witnesses after the lawyers are done.
