How cleaning out the coffee pot at work could help protect you from a layoff

The job market is improving. The unemployment rate has been going down. But big layoffs have hardly gone away: The number of job cuts planned by U.S. employers grew to a nearly two-year high in January, according to outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. The energy industry was partly to blame, but companies including American Express, eBay and IBM also have announced or have begun making big cuts.

So how can you help protect yourself against a layoff?
