The Missoula High School Robotics Team Builds Robot for Regional Competition

The Missoula Robotics Team is excited to announce they are in the process of putting the finishing touches on the competition robot they will take to Salt Lake City this year for the highly regarded regional FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition (FRC).

This year’s Missoula Robotics Team is made up of 30 high school students from three high schools in Missoula as well as 8 adult mentors. The team was created to inspire young people to investigate and experience the many career choices related to mathematics, engineering, science and technology. FIRST® Robotics is providing local high school students with opportunities to work alongside professional engineers to design, build, and program a robot to meet a specific challenge. The competitions are high-tech sporting events where students learn the "joy and agony" of competition and the benefits of "gracious professionalism". FIRST® isn’t just about building robots; it’s about learning life skills. The students are developing their abilities in teamwork, finance, fundraising, budgeting, and project management.

The Missoula Robotics Team competes in a premiere division called FRC, of which there over 3,000 teams worldwide. The FRC challenge gives students 6 weeks to go from a blank sheet of paper, through the design, build, testing, and development of their own totally unique robot. It is a short and intense season of problem solving and learning. In mid-March the robot and team members will be competing at a regional qualifier in Salt Lake City, with hopes of qualifying for the World Championship in St. Louis.

In just a mere 5 days from today (no later than 11:59PM, Tuesday, February 17th), the official rules of the FIRST® competition mandate the competition robot is "Bagged and Tagged". Their robot creation will remain under lock and key until it is unveiled at the competition in Salt Lake City on March 11, 2015.

The Missoula Robotics Team would love to get the word out about their experiences and this unique and challenging event.
