If you have heard or read news stories about NorthWestern Energy’s lobbyist characterizing net metering as melanoma or akin to Obamacare, you may be tempted to think that a greedy utility is out to kill a virtuous renewable resource, such as customer installed solar electricity generation. As is almost always the case with the electric utility business, this issue is more complicated than good versus evil.

Net metering credits a customer’s electric bill for electricity produced by a renewable energy generator owned by the customer.
