Missoula’s Community Medical Center sale to for profit company questioned

As the Montana Attorney General vets the pending sale of the nonprofit Community Medical Center http://www.communitymed.org/ to a for-profit operation from out of state, more details about the proposed transaction are being made public. Among those details is a $1.2 million severance package for hospital CEO Steve Carlson once the deal closes.

In March, Carlson and the Community Medical Center Board of Directors announced that they intend to sell Community to the Billings Clinic and the for profit RegionalCare for $67 million. RegionalCare, which owns eight other hospitals, is funded by global private equity firm Warburg Pincus.

During a public forum held last week by the AG’s office at Hellgate High School, the severance package didn’t come up. But Carlson and the hospital board did take a significant amount of heat from locals concerned about the proposed deal.
