Mentors provide support, structure to people in veterans court

It’s ingrained in military culture never to leave a fellow warrior behind. Mentors paired with offenders in the Yellowstone County Veterans Treatment Court have carried that imperative throughout their adult lives, decades after their own military service.

"I think there is camaraderie among armed forces members not unlike high school or collegiate sports participants," said Steve Repac, one of 10 mentors in the Courts Assisting Military Offenders (CAMO) program housed in Judge Mary Jane Knisely’s court. "Duty, honor and service doesn’t end with our tour of duty or enlistment period. It goes on forever."

To date, 12 clients have graduated from the program, which currently has 27 clients and four others waiting.
