MISSOULIAN EDITORIAL: Politics shouldn’t stifle childhood education

Montana is in the last weeks before Election Day, the 2015 Legislature will convene in three months, and Gov. Steve Bullock is busily trying to pin down support for what is sure to become the signature issue of his term in office: early childhood education.

If, that is, he can convince the Montana Legislature to go along with it.

Montana already has the money, Bullock told the Missoulian last week. It also has ample evidence of the benefits of such programs, as well as strong statewide support from local school districts, government agencies, nonprofits, churches, charities, business leaders and, of course, Montana parents.

What the Early Edge Montana http://earlyedge.mt.gov/ initiative needs now is for all those Montanans to make their support for the program clear to the folks who must approve funding for the plan: our state senators and representatives. And the final days of campaign season, by the way, are an excellent time to discuss such matters with prospective legislators.
