Women and pay raises — how to have the conversation

Raises are in the news — how to ask, when to ask and even whether to ask.

We may idealize the image of the self-assured worker who saunters into the boss’s office, advocates for him- or herself and comes out with a nice salary bump, but not everyone agrees that’s the way to do it.

Last week, Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s chief executive, stirred up the business world with his remarks that when it comes to raises, women should rely on karma.

"It’s not really about asking for a raise, but knowing and having faith that the system will give you the right raise," he said.

He later backtracked, but he wasn’t the only CEO to be talking about raises last week.
