A Great Place to Put Community Health Clinics: Fire Stations

As the need for cost-effective access to primary and emergency care continues to grow, Hayward, California, has begun construction of a firehouse that includes an on-site health clinic.

The Firehouse Clinic will solicit residents with limited health care access to choose the clinic over the emergency room, especially for preventative care needs, by providing longer hours, quick appointment times, and a seven-exam room capacity.

The Firehouse Clinic will leverage the community trust normally associated with its firefighters to encourage regional residents to use its facilities.

A new firehouse clinic in California shows how an abundant but under-used public resource–fire stations–can be made even more useful for a community.
