Montana Board of Public Education will tackle pre-K standards

Governor Steve Bullock has made early childhood education one of his top priorities, and has promised to bring a proposal to the 2015 Montana Legislature to make free school available for four-year-olds statewide.

He told the Montana Board of Public Education on Thursday that it will have some work ahead to create standards for statewide preschool. Montana is one of eight states in the nation with no public funding for a pre-kindergarten option for four-year-olds.

"This is something that I sincerely want to see change, and over the coming weeks and months you’ll review a number of proposals related to this issue. What you’ll provide really through this is that foundation to say, ‘Here is actually what that quality program is," Gov. Bullock said.
