Montana Announces SAM – a situational awareness tool that puts incident information from multiple sources in one place.

The Montana County Fire Warden’s Association has been working with the Montana State Fire Chiefs Association and DNRC on the development of a tool called Situation Analyst Montana (SAM) http://www.SAMontana.org . SAM is a proof of concept project funded from Homeland Security Grant Program funds with the goal of creating a situational awareness tool that puts incident information from multiple sources in one place. Basically a one stop shop to see numerous resources. The big benefit of Situation Analyst is the ease in which incident personnel can create and share geographic information with each other from anyplace using a variety of devices.

We are now at a point of releasing SAM for agencies in Montana to utilize. Please keep in mind that this is a proof of concept project and there will be continual changes and additions (we have a bunch of tasks for the vendor currently pending) as we move forward, so expect things to be fluid.

We have scheduled four initial webex training sessions (attached info below) to provide a quick 30 minute overview of the system for potential users. Please visit samontana.org for more information and to request system access.

Summary

Situation Analyst Montana (SAM) is a proof of concept project to enhance situational awareness at both the local and state level across Montana. SAM is working towards creating a single location for creating and viewing incident information among everyone involved with an incident in a visual manner.

With SAM, any user in the field can create or add to an incident using a smart device (tablet or phone) and everyone else will immediately see it. A triage application is also available for creating and tagging a structure layer on the fly. Later this summer we hope to have an offline version that allows for maps and incident data to be synchronized for use in areas with no internet.

This system is available to any government agency within Montana at no cost and our hope is that SAM will become an every day tool for Montana.
