Copper mine exploration near Smith River may resume

Helena – A company proposing a major new copper mine near the headwaters of the Smith River has a new plan for some test drillings.

Tintina Alaska Exploration http://www.tintinaresources.com/subsidiaries , which had withdrawn its previous application for a long exploratory underground tunnel, is now proposing three six-inch wells for an aquifer pumping test, plus a four-inch monitoring well in Meagher County.

Environmentalists had sued to block the earlier plan, citing risks to the Smith River.

The Montana Department of Environmental Quality is seeking comment on an Environmental Assessment issued Monday.
