Missoula’s tax burden a bargain in Montana

Death and taxes may be certain, but are they always equal?

An analysis of taxes levied by Montana’s six largest cities reveals differences in the way taxes are collected and slight disparities in the property tax burden incurred by residents of each municipality.

Some cities, like Missoula, rely heavily on property taxes to fill their general fund – an account that’s used to cover most municipal services. Other cities, like Billings, rely more on district assessments, collecting money they can’t or don’t receive through property taxes alone.
