University of Montana SoBA Proposes Business Minor

After graduation do you want to run your own dance studio? Manage a pharmacy? Write about business topics? Market your own invention? Run a medical practice? Write computer code for businesses? Manage a nonprofit? Work for a biotechnology start-up? A business minor could help you do any of those things and more! Business courses can complement your non-business major, set you apart from other graduate school applicants, give you an edge in competitive job markets, and open up a wide range of possibilities and specialized career paths to you.

More and more non-business students desire a foundation in business principles for those very reasons. And due to this increasing demand, the School of Business Administration has proposed a new minor in business. "This is such an exciting opportunity for non-business students," said Associate Dean Terri Herron. "The courses in the minor are not watered down. They are our regular business courses, so minors will sit alongside majors in the classroom. This interdisciplinary flavor will be a welcomed addition to our curriculum. Students and employers in all fields recognize the value of having a business foundation as students launch a career."

SoBA Advising Coordinator Sandi Nelson said that as word got out about the proposed minor, there was a great deal of anticipation coming from all over campus, from students and advisors alike. "Every semester in the past," she said, "we have had to turn away several students who have inquired about a minor, and now we are excited to be able to give them an option. We have been met with nothing but enthusiasm in conversations with my colleagues across campus, and cannot wait to offer this new experience to all interested UM students."

The business minor has been approved by SoBA faculty and is subject to Faculty Senate approval next year for fall 2015 implementation, but students can begin the lower-level indicator course sequence as early as this summer. The business minor also has a 90-percent overlap with the courses required for entry into the MBA or Master of Accountancy graduate programs. Students interested in learning more about the proposed business minor should see a business advisor in GBB 335, M-F, 8:30-3:30.
