Govt CAOs Push Performance Improvement through Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s)

Key performance indicators are guideposts to success. In effect, they represent a scorecard of key areas of activity. If you’re not keeping score then you’re just practicing.

As the old adage goes, you can’t manage what you don’t measure, and that holds true for government fiscal strength and performance, one of the five pillars of Memphis Fast Forward.

The good news for taxpayers is that City of Memphis and Shelby County Chief Administrative Officers George Little and Harvey Kennedy are building new government performance management tools starting with the establishment of "key performance indicators" (KPIs).

We talked a bit with Little and Kennedy about their new KPI initiatives which — when fully established and utilized — will be a critical step toward ensuring taxpayers are getting the best possible value for government services.
