Missoula files for eminent domain takeover of water system

"It is in the best interest of the public for the city of Missoula to own and operate its water supply and system as a public utility, at cost and not for profit," said Mayor John Engen. "Public ownership ensures that the people have access to and control over our clean and abundant water. This water system will be for sale, and the city should be the buyer."

The city of Missoula filed for condemnation of its water supply today, seeking to acquire Mountain Water Co. via eminent domain.

City leaders said they attempted to purchase the water company through negotiations with its owner, The Carlyle Group.

Those negotiation attempts were rebuffed.
