A question not to ask a great manager

"What do you want me to do?"

I asked my former boss this question during my first performance review with him. It seemed like a fair question–like, something I should do both out of respect for his leadership role, and to ensure I was focused on the things he had hired me to do. However, even though over a decade has passed since that moment, I’ll never forget his reaction. I’ll never forget that puzzled and slightly disappointed expression on his face. And, I’ll never forget his words, "Isn’t that what I hired you to figure out?"
