Airbnb Says "Data is the lifeblood of the business – We always begin with data,"

Airbnb Inc., reportedly close to a deal that values the company at $10 billion, says its online marketplace for short-term home rentals is driven by data. "We think of data as the customer’s voice. It’s telling us what works and what doesn’t work," says Riley Newman, head of data science at the six-year-old startup.

"Data is the lifeblood of the business … We always begin with data," he said Thursday at Gigaom’s Structure Data conference in New York. Mr. Newman made his remarks during a panel discussion that also included Yael Garten, manager of mobile data science at LinkedIn Inc., and Henry Lin, data scientist at Uber.
