Eight Montana Students Honored as Newman Civic Fellows for 2014

College and university presidents, all members of Campus Compact, have recognized engaged college students who have demonstrated an investment in their community as 2014 Newman Civic Fellows. Through service, research, and advocacy, these Fellows are making the most of their college experiences to better understand themselves, the root causes of social issues, and effective mechanisms for creating lasting change.

The 2014 National class of Fellows is composed of 197 students from 36 states and the District of Columbia.

The 2014 Newman Civic Fellows from Montana are:

Alisa Dowling, Carroll College

Ryan Pitts, Flathead Valley Community College

Chad Ledbetter, Great Falls College MSU

Mara Menahan, University of Montana

Mattie Walton, Montana State University Billings

Justin Marks, Helena College University of Montana

William (John) Cowles, Montana State University

Jessica Lammi, University of Montana Western

The fellowship is named for Dr. Frank Newman, a founder of Campus Compact. Newman had a tremendous impact on American education reform and its role in the development of citizens who are eager and prepared to make a difference.

Through service-learning courses and other opportunities for community engagement, colleges are developing students’ public problem-solving skills, such as the ability to analyze community needs, the willingness to participate in public processes and debate, the commitment to raise awareness about challenges, and the ability to inspire others to become part of solutions.

The Newman Civic Fellows Award is sponsored in part by the KPMG Foundation.

Montana Campus Compact is a coalition of college and university presidents who are committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education to improve community life and to educate students for civic and social responsibility.
