Missoula council hears spending, cutting ideas from ‘budget games’

"Sometimes, it felt like pulling teeth to get the information that we needed."

On Monday, Missoula City Councilwoman Caitlin Copple shared results of the recent "budget games," an event where an estimated 100 community members played an interactive game that elicited their priorities for city spending – and cutting. Every Voice Engaged of California developed the municipal game, and the director compiled results for Missoula.

"It seemed like the interest level was pretty high, both from citizens who registered and attended as well as sponsors from the community," Copple said.

In short, Every Voice Engaged director Steve Dodds observed that Missoula doesn’t mind spending money on city services, Copple said. She figured that wouldn’t be a surprise to council members and city staff at the meeting.

"All in all, people do see values in the programs that the city provides," Copple said.
