Scholarship program aimed at 7th graders

Low- to moderate-income seventh graders from Montana who stand out in their schools for high academic ability and other achievement are encouraged to apply for the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Young Scholars Program scholarships http://www.jkcf.org .

No Montana students have applied for the scholarship, which helps seventh-graders plan a suitable academic course load. It funds summer academic, study-abroad and community-service opportunities, lessons to develop music, art or other talents, college and career counseling.

The application period ends March 20. The seventh graders can continue to receive scholarships throughout college and graduate school to the tune of $30,000 to $50,000 annually.

For students entering the program, the average family income is approximately $25,000, and more than 90 percent have incomes under $60,000.
