Saskatchewan manufacturing sales top record $15.2 billion in 2013, but more work to be done

"Our neighbor to the north is growing by leaps and bounds in their manufacturing sector. Yet they too are anticipating constraints due to limited skilled workforce. We’ve promoted the concept of bringing jobs back to the US from Asia, but can we really rise to meet that challenge if we don’t have the qualified people to make that happen? This is certainly not just a Montana problem but a US problem, and appears it may be one in Canada as well…" Tom Spika http://www.spikawelding.com/

2013 marked a banner year for Saskatchewan manufacturers: More than $15.2 billion in sales (a record high). Roughly 28,400 employees (an increase of 1,000 workers over 2012). And productivity levels 60 per cent higher than those charted in 2007, prior to the economic downturn (as measured by sales per employee).

As of November, meanwhile, the average weekly earnings of Saskatchewan residents employed in the sector spiked more than 14 per cent over the 12-month average set only one year ago, and remains 18 per cent higher than the cumulative provincial average for all industries.

These numbers defy a storyline that, even if not said aloud, still reverberate within some circles of public opinion — one that paints manufacturing as a ‘sunset industry’ on the decline.
