Senate hears from Crow tribe on early childhood programs

Early childhood programs like Head Start face many barriers on the Crow reservation, but Montana’s Crow tribe is working to overcome them, according to a tribal official.

"Opportunity and access to early childhood educational settings are crucial in changing mindsets, lives, communities and families within the reservation," Ginger Goes Ahead, program manager for the Crow Head Start Program, said in written testimony submitted to the Senate Indian Affairs Committee.

Committee members heard from several tribal officials and experts at a hearing Wednesday as it examines the effectiveness of early childhood programs in Indian Country. Goes Ahead was scheduled to testify but was unable to appear in person due to travel complications.
