Montana State University names Jerry Sheehan new chief information officer

Montana State University has hired Jerry Sheehan as its new chief information officer.

As CIO, Sheehan will provide oversight, management and strategic planning for the university’s information technology infrastructure, including the campus data networking and systems; classroom learning technology; information security; campus telephone system; the university-wide administrative software system; and Web infrastructure and user support services. Sheehan will be a member of MSU’s senior leadership team and report to MSU President Waded Cruzado and Provost Martha Potvin. He will start May 1.

"I am excited to join Montana State University and for the opportunity to work with the talented information technology professionals in the IT Center, across campus and throughout the system in developing a robust user-centric information technology infrastructure that empowers students, faculty and administrators," Sheehan said. "I look forward to joining the Bozeman community and plan on enjoying the beautiful mountain views and the opportunity to engage with the great minds at MSU."

Sheehan is currently chief of staff at the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology, an interdisciplinary research institute at the University of California San Diego and University of California Irvine that brings together more than 900 faculty members and 150 technical staff to develop and implement information technology solutions for the citizens of California. Previously, Sheehan held IT leadership and management positions at Purdue University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has a master’s degree in political science from Eastern Illinois University.

"We are pleased to have Jerry join us at MSU in this important role," Cruzado said. "Montana State’s CIO provides crucial leadership for the university’s information technology system, and we are confident Sheehan will advance the information technology goals outlined in the university’s strategic plan."

Sheehan was selected from four finalists after a national search. He succeeds Dewitt Latimer, who passed away in May. Since May, Adam Edelman has served as interim chief information officer and Anne Milkovich has served as interim associate chief information officer.
