Montana Career Opportunity – Executive Director – Montana Association of Conservation Districts

The Montana Association of Conservation Districts (MACD) is seeking to hire an Executive
Director. This is a full-time position and is located in Helena, Montana.

MACD is a 70+ year old non-profit, private association representing Montana’s 58 Conservation
Districts. MACD’s mission is to advance the purpose of Conservation Districts and their
constituents by providing leadership, education, information and representation.

Specific goals of
MACD are accomplished through legislative activities, capacity building and advancing
resolutions that emanate from membership. MACD is governed by a Board of Directors
consisting of 18 Conservation District Supervisors from six areas across Montana.

The Executive Director facilitates and enhances the Conservation Districts’ programs in
Montana, including, but not limited to: policy development, promotion, communication,
membership services, office administration, grant management, accounting, and legislative
affairs. See the Position Description for additional details. The general responsibilities include:

1. Develop and maintain a presence for MACD on a state, regional and national level.

2. Work directly with the Officers and Directors of the MACD Board of Directors in
carrying out the business of the organization by ensuring timely, thorough
communication and advice; identify funding sources and work in conjunction with
MACD Board of Directors to secure funding for Districts and the association.

3. Establish communication with political leaders at all levels; attend legislative sessions
and meetings to promote the community work of conservation districts statewide.

4. Work closely with partners at the Montana Department of Natural Resources and
Conservation and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, as well as other
state and federal agencies, to promote conservation districts.

5. Prepare the annual budget, project income and manage expenditures, and manage an
office for the Montana Association of Conservation Districts.

6. Maintain a professional level of services to members and partners, including a timely
electronic newsletter and other literature as necessary.

7. Maintain a timely accounting system for MACD, including the provision of monthly
financial statements to officers and directors.

8. Manage the MACD website with an eye towards improving ease of use, up to date
postings and expanded use as a communication tool for conservation districts, MACD &
the public at large.

9. Work with representatives of agricultural, natural resource, and conservation
organizations on issues of common interest.

10. Attend all MACD meetings and functions, including board meetings and the annual
convention. Coordinate and implement all aspects of the convention as directed by the
Board of Directors.

11. Work with special committees on projects as needed. Develop policies for Board
consideration.

12. Manage programs for the Association, including but not limited to Irrigation Water
Management, the Sage-Grouse Initiative, Sage-Grouse Fence Program, etc.

13. Coordinate with the Montana Watershed Coordination Council on mutual projects and
programs such as the Big Sky Watershed Corps (BSWC) AmeriCorps program.

14. Serve as the Executive Director of the Soil and Water Conservation Districts of Montana,
Inc., a 501 (c) (3) sister organization with the same Board of Directors.

15. Supervise four full-time and one part-time staff.
Desired qualifications – At least five to seven years experience managing an association,
preferably in a non-profit environment engaged in agriculture, natural resource sciences and/or
conservation. Experience in facilitating large/diverse groups of constituents, and working
collaboratively in a positive manner with partners/others are very important skills for this
position.

Salary will be negotiated based on qualifications and experience. Competitive benefit package is
