$500K grant will boost bandwidth for research at University of Montana

A grant from the National Science Foundation will bring greater bandwidth to the University of Montana http://www.umt.edu/ , boosting research projects with big-data needs while setting the groundwork for future upgrades.

The $500,000 grant will bring high-speed bandwidth to the Clapp and ISB buildings on campus, providing 10 gigabit potential to researchers in three major studies, including earthquakes in the developing world and changes in forest infrastructure caused by the mountain pine beetle.

"Research will drive you above 1 gigabit pretty fast," said Matt Riley, chief information officer for Internet technology at UM. "We’re specifically setting up for 10 gigabits. That becomes a profile most universities with a lot of research can support, and it’s what the grant supports at UM."
