RiverStone Health nursing program keeps 6,200 students healthy in 19 rural schools in Yellowstone County, Montana

The school nurse serves as the health care expert in the school, often wearing many different hats to meet student and school staff health needs.

"Oftentimes the school nurse is the only healthcare professional in the building," Graf said. "When a school is without a nurse, the duties usually fall to the secretary."

School nurses provide myriad services including vision, hearing, dental and scoliosis screenings, developing health care plans, crisis intervention and health education.

Yet, each day is different, Graf said, and plans can quickly change.

Challenged by a student body less healthy than it once was, dispensing medications and increasingly common asthma inhalers is about the only daily regularity.
