NuScale partners with Western states to develop its first nuclear reactor
July 2, 2013 /
NuScale has designed a small, modular nuclear reactor that it says can be operated more safely and cost effectively than conventional reactors. Each module produces 45 megawatts of electricity — enough to power 33,000 homes — but a dozen reactors can be strung together to create a substantial power plant.
The modular setup makes construction less expensive, according to NuScale, and in the event of a disaster the reactor is designed to cool down automatically without electricity or additional water.
