Montana Health Care Foundation to Launch with $40 Million in Bank – Possibly up to $200MM with sale of Blue Cross Blue Shield

It’s not yet clear what the nonprofit will do with that money

The new Montana Healthcare Foundation will have a hefty $40 million bankroll to start, and up to $200 million after Blue Cross Blue Shield of Montana’s assets are sold in a pending acquisition, but it’s not yet clear what the nonprofit will do with that money.

Attorney General Tim Fox announced the creation of the new foundation Friday, the same week he and Insurance Commissioner Monica Lindeen approved the sale of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Montana to Health Care Service Corp. of Chicago. The two companies are reviewing the conditions included in the state regulators’ approval orders.

Fox appoints former law school dean as interim head of new health-care foundation

Attorney General Tim Fox said Friday he has appointed a former University of Montana law school dean to help choose the board overseeing a new, multimillion-dollar health care foundation financed by the sale of Montana’s largest private health insurer.

Yet neither Fox nor retired law professor Edwin Eck, the foundation’s new interim trustee, could say yet just what the foundation will do with its $100 million-plus in eventual proceeds.
