University of Montana Students get $1.8M for fired workers: Group pressured UM to cancel contract with Adidas after factory in Indonesia was closed
The University of Montana’s Students for Economic and Social Justice group celebrated an international victory against unfair labor practices last week after athletic apparel giant Adidas agreed to pay $1.8 million in severance pay to workers of a shuttered Indonesian factory.
The small student group convinced UM officials to pull its apparel contract with Adidas last fall after joining a United Students Against Sweatshops campaign to help the workers claim their back pay.
Senior print journalism major Ketti Wilhelm led the charge at UM. She praised students for their hard work on the issue.
"They are the reason it happened, if we hadn’t been in (UM President Royce Engstrom’s) office telling him we’re not going to stand for (Adidas) breaking international labor laws, this wouldn’t have happened," Wilhelm said.
