City of Billings fights rumors about building permit review time

City officials have been trying to get the word out that building permits, far from being backlogged, are being processed fairly quickly.

Planning Director Candi Beaudry said rumors started flying about a month ago when the Building Division got swamped with something like 30 permit requests in a couple of days, "some of them pretty substantial."

An exasperated clerk, asked by a contractor how long it would take to get his permit approved, said it would be eight to 10 weeks.

"We’ve never gone over six weeks," Beaudry said. "Our average is 11 days."
