Bozeman, Montana computer inventor Maury Irvine honored by Microsoft founders

Not very many people have had the chance to shake Bill Gates’ hand. But then again, not very many people have lived a life like Maury Irvine’s.

Irvine, a Bozeman resident and Montana State University alumnus, was an honorary guest at the grand opening of the Living Science Computer Museum in Seattle. He was recognized at the reception last week for his invention of the world’s first in-flight transistorized computer and for his research at Bell Laboratories.

Reception guests included Gates and Paul Allen, the brains behind the company that transformed the computer industry — Microsoft. Allen, who owns the museum, personally invited Irvine and had him flown to Washington for the reception.
