Data Science Emerges as New Discipline

Universities are rushing to create data science programs, a move that reminds Guest Columnist Irving Wladawksky-Berger of how campuses embraced computer science in the 1960s and 1970s. Because it can be "applied to just about any domain of knowledge," data science requires not only programming and computing knowledge, but the creative and communication skills required to "present whatever insights are discovered in a way that they can be best understood by domain practitioners in their own terms," he writes.
