MSU offers Science of Everest curriculum for teachers
To honor the 50th anniversary of the first American ascent of Mount Everest, Montana State University is re-releasing its Science of Everest curriculum with updates for 2013.
The eight-lesson series was created last year when MSU geologist David Lageson and graduate student Travis Corthouts climbed on Everest with Bozeman-based mountaineer Conrad Anker and a team from National Geographic and The North Face.
More than 2,000 Montana students used the lessons in their classrooms.
The 2013 version includes information about the 2012 climb as well as a newly completed Climber’s Journal to accompany the eight lessons and classroom activities. The materials are appropriate for grades 3-8, although teachers of younger students have used them, as well.

Lessons cover geology, climate science, human physiology, glaciology, biodiversity and other STEM-related topics, as well as some history and culture of the Himalaya. The site also includes a book list, quizzes, and resources created by teachers who participated in last year’s Everest Education Expedition.
