Big Data is Here-Now the Real Work Begins

Data scientists need to make a bigger effort to communicate with corporate executives, Harris said, because it’s likely the executives don’t trust them.

They’ve been burned in the past by startups and by hot new technology-remember data warehousing in the 1990s-that didn’t deliver as promised. They’re impatient with the jargon and acronyms that the tech industry has created and that technologists they know tend to speak.

Data scientists need to be better interviewers, she said, skilled at drawing out managers and helping them think through what they know about their businesses so they can evaluate how new data technologies could help them.

As for the managers of the future, they should be learning math and data literacy now, while they’re still in school. "Companies in every industry are headed for a much more analytical future…even the fashion industry," Harris says. "There are places that are last bastion, but they’re getting fewer."
