Portland Community College teams up with Genentech, Welch Allyn and bioscience companies to train future workers

Businesses like Welch Allyn say they volunteer at the college because many science students graduate with little knowledge about the inner workings of the highly regulated bioscience industry. Every step of developing a product, from the design to packaging, is laden with protections and safeguards — including making sure products don’t resemble illegal drug paraphernalia — that students never deal with in Biology 101.

To fill that gap, local representatives of the booming bioscience industry have worked in conjunction with PCC’s Bioscience Technology Program since 2007 to develop classes tailored to training their ideal workforces.
