Made in Montana: Local artisans use Etsy.com to market products

For years, Karen Gray sold vintage fabric, patterns and buttons on eBay, but when the online auction site changed its fee structure, Gray decided to look for another avenue.

The Great Falls woman came across http://www.Etsy.com, a website that acts as a marketplace for handmade and vintage items, as well as for art and craft supplies.

Etsy was started by Rob Kalin in early 2005. A painter, carpenter and photographer, Kalin struggled to find a viable marketplace to exhibit and sell his creations online. So he launched Etsy, where customers wouldn’t have to wade though overstock electronics and broken appliances to find artisan goods and vintage items.

Now Etsy has more than 800,000 active shops, offering everything from hand-knitted dog sweaters to one-of-a-kind wedding rings.
