Funding sought for K-12 records
$35 mil would update outdated data system
Arizona’s superintendent of schools, John Huppenthal, says the state’s K-12 data system is on the "verge of collapse" and is seeking $35 million in state funding over the next two years to fix and improve outdated systems.
For more than a decade, the Arizona Department of Education has struggled to track the 1 million students who attend public schools and pay schools accurately based on enrollment. The department is moving to replace the giant data system called the Student Accountability Information System, or SAIS. But additional money is needed to complete the task and add features such as access to student-level data, Huppenthal told education leaders and legislators at a panel discussion Thursday.
