Missoula, Montana’s Big Sky High School Health Science Academy uses hands-on approach to teaching – Grand opening celebration on 10/16

Here in this place of a new kind of learning, the halls pulsate with the high-octane life force that only teenagers can generate.

It’s Tuesday at Big Sky High School http://www.mcps.k12.mt.us/portal/Home/Academies/tabid/3337/Default.aspx , and the gymnasium has been transformed into a giant obstacle course that is a map of the human heart.

Jumping, running and sometimes chugging slowly, the entire freshman class of Montana’s Health Science Academy flows through the maze of veins, the anterior vena cava, aorta and other cardiac plumbing, pulsating with life and giving animation to this unusual exercise, just as real blood flows through an actual heart.

When they are finished, the class of 90 freshmen eagerly rotates through other academic units in which they apply their monthlong study of body systems.

In English class, the students rap aloud verse they have written about the heart to the rhythm of the beating organ.
