Federal electricity grid plans have Montana co-ops concerned

Modernizing federal transmission facilities, which is being advanced by Energy Secretary Steven Chu, could drive up electricity bills for Montanans served by rural electric cooperatives, cooperative officials said Wednesday.

"It’s the most urgent issue facing electric cooperatives in Montana right now," said Gary Wiens, assistant general manager of the Montana Electric Cooperatives’ Association.

MECA is conducting its annual meeting in Great Falls this week. Rural cooperatives deliver power to 219,800 meters, or more than 400,000 people.
