Community Invited To Missoula College Building Plan Open House at the UM Golf Course, 10/3
University of Montana President Royce Engstrom and UM officials invite the community to learn about the future of the proposed Missoula College building and take part in a community conversation from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, at the UM Golf Course Clubhouse.
The open house will give community members the opportunity to ask questions and learn the history of how the location was selected, see where the buildings will be located and how it fits into the South Campus Master Plan, and learn how the golf course can be reconfigured.
"This proposed building will be an exceptional asset for Missoula College students," said Engstrom. "We want the community to be engaged in and supportive of this effort."
The University and the Montana Board of Regents have made funding a new Missoula College building a top priority for the 2013 Legislature. If approved, the state-of-the-art, $47 million facility would be the first building of UM’s South Campus, located along Arthur and South avenues only a few blocks from the University’s central mountain campus. Construction would begin in March 2014 and finish in July 2016.
MC enrollment has grown rapidly in recent years. The original Administration Building was built in 1968 to accommodate 400 students, and another building added in 1978 allowed an enrollment of 700. The college now serves about 2,500 students.
Approximately 30 disciplines and programs would move to the new 120,000-square-foot building, which would provide more space for classrooms, instructional laboratories, conference rooms, counseling rooms, a library, common areas and faculty offices.
UM’s South Campus plan was created from 18 months of research, 32 public meetings, hundreds of public comments and environmental and cultural assessments.
