Missoula’s Hellgate High School wins Northwestern Energy Academic Award

Hellgate High School has won the Northwestern Energy Academic Excellence Award for the 2011-2012 school year.

The award is given annually in association with the Montana High School Association (MHSA) to one school in each classification (Class AA, A, B and C) that has the highest "average" Grade Point Average (GPA) for its participating students in MHSA-sanctioned sports, cheerleading, and state speech and drama, and music festival activities. The program was initiated in 1988.

Hellgate Assistant Principal and Activities Director Lynn Farmer said the school reported 256 Hellgate students that met the criteria for the award. On average, these students had a GPA of 3.6, which equates to a high B.

Missoula’s Big Sky High School finished second in the rankings for the 2011-12 school year. Big Sky reported 293 students that met the criteria with an average GPA of 3.4.

"I really appreciate the students, teachers, coaches, staff and parents for their efforts in bringing this award to Hellgate," Farmer said. "These kids give 100 percent effort both in the classroom and in their extracurricular activities. They deserve this recognition and we are so proud of them."
